Obituary of William Walker Scott III
William W Scott, III, of South Fayette Township, passed away peacefully at home on November 29th. He was the son of the late William W Scott Jr and Cecilia Bednar Scott, and is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia Hartz Scott, M.D. and by his much loved step sons: Jason Soloff, Adam Soloff (Dana), and Mark Soloff (Lisa) and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Sean, Elijah, and Helen.
Numbered among those who Will loved and those who loved him are his surviving brothers: Joesph P Scott (Cheryle) and Michael F. Scott (Linda). He was preceded in death by his brother David A Scott (Leslie), sister Mary Scott Walker, and Elizabeth Seton Scott(infant). Also surviving are his nieces and nephews: Amy, Michael, Ben, Sara, Colin, Matthew, Joe, and his many cousins.
Will graduated in the last class at St Luke High School in Carnegie, PA, in 1962, graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, 1966. Completing US Officer Candidate School Newport RI, third in his class, he then served as communications officer on the Destroyer USS Charles R Ware in the Pacific/Vietnam and Administrative Officer Naval Air Station. He briefly worked at Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Systems before obtaining his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Georgetown Law School. He clerked for the Office of Chief Counsel US Coast Guard and was active in the Naval Reserve until 1974 with the rank of lieutenant. Returning to Pittsburgh, he opened a private law practice.
Will was a man of many talents, and he generously shared them. His ability to remodel, rewire, plumb and repair was often called upon by his siblings and friends. He was an expert gardener and furniture refinisher. An accomplished historian, Will could stump many a caller on a 1980’s Pittsburgh radio trivia show on the Civil War. He was a frequent guest on the Doug Hoerth radio show on KDKA as a comic, delivering hilarious vignettes. He was a true renaissance man, and his knowledge and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Most importantly his kindness will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, December 9th from 1-3 and 5-7 PM at the Warchol Funeral Home Inc., 3060 Washington Pike, Bridgeville, PA (412-221-3333). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 10 at 1:15 PM at Holy Child Church of Corpus Christi Parish (EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH). Interment to follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp.
